You've Come Long Way Baby!!!

Everyone strives to improve and have the best photos possible for their listings.

A few different shops were willing to share with me their photos from when they started on Etsy along with their current product photos.  Let's see what we can learn from their photos!

Props vs White Background

If you look at many web-sites that sell product such as Amazon, IKEA, Old Navy, etc., so often you see the product only on a white background as their main photo. Why do they do this? There's no confusion as to what is included.
Props can be both beneficial as well as a deterrent. Customers may love the prop more than your item shown and go wandering off looking for something else to buy. On the other hand, a prop can add to the beauty of your product, therefore creating a sale!

Jill's jewelry is always photographed with a unique background, making quite a statement with her jewelry!

Up Close and Personal

So you want to capture the detail in you product but when you click, you get a blurry product and clear photo. Back up a little.  Every camera has a limit as to how close to the product you can really get.  If you get too close, your background will be clear, product will be blurry, and well, it's just not going to be the most appealing photo for your customer to look at.  If you need to, you can always crop out any unwanted space when you go into your editing program.  In this way, you can control what you are bringing attention too, whether it's a portion of your product, or if you want to see the entire piece.  Remember, etsy does crop the thumbnails some, so you don't want to crop too close to you item.

Janet's jewelry is photographed up close to allow you to see the detail and beauty of each uniquely created piece.

Lighting

Play around with your lighting. Light reflects differently off one product compared to another. Play with your lighting to get it just right. Too much light in one spot can leave blown out spots, while too little in another area leaves it dark and unevenly colored.

Angel's bath and body products are photographed with a nice equal balance of light keeping everything equally lit and the white, well, white.

Try different angles from the sides, light from the top, and if you have capability, even from the bottom. For glass and crystal products, diffusing the light is a good idea to avoid glare on the products.  You can purchase lights that are covered, or use a light box to filter the light through. Janet captures the different cuts and shapes of her jewelry very well with her lighting setup.

Can I really get pictures like that?
With time and practice, you can improve your photos.  Just remember, if you can't get it to look just right with props, then do the white background for now. Practice with props when you have time and something eye catching will happen!
As far as the close photos, try stepping back a foot and then cropping the photo in your photo editing software to enlarge what you're wanting to be seen most.
To purchase photography light boxes and lighting, check out different camera shops like Henry's or B&H.

This blog post is brought to you by Crystal of Crystal Gayle Photography, home of product photography (for the times you don't feel like shooting your own product), as well as photography prints to accessorize your home.

Feburary Birthstone - Amethyst

Amethyst is the birthstone for February. It is a crystalline quartz gemstone in shades of purple, lilac or mauve.  The word amethyst comes from Greek, meaning "without drunkenness" and amethyst was worn as a guard against drunkenness and to instill a sober mind. It is thought the amethyst is the perfect stone to symbolize The Age of Aquarius.

Amethyst is the birthstone for those people born in the month of January or February and for Pisces (those born between February 21 – March 20), particularly those who many wish to obtain professional advancement and long life. It ensures them material and financial gains.

Locations: Amethyst is found in alluvial deposits or in geodes. Some of the largest geodes containing amethyst are in Brazil. Amethyst from the Urals (Russia) has a reddish tinge; Canadian amethyst is violet. Other locations include Sri Lanka, India, Uruguay, Madagascar, USA, Germany, Australia, Namibia and Zambia, Uruguay, Mexico, Western Australia, and Morocco.

Beliefs about Amethyst:

Deciphering Shop Stats

Deciphering your shop stats can be a chore. When you see all the link names the first thing you think is WHAT SITE IS THAT? Hopefully I can help you figure out some of the common ones  so you can figure out what social networks are working best for you!!

I am going to break down my Shop Stats for the Month of January 2103 (PaganCellarJewelry) and explain the top 20 sites I got views from . This should cover a majority of sites you will come across and give you more of an understanding of Shop Stats and where they come from. As a side note I had 20 sales for the month.

  1. etsy.com 4,471 - searched via Etsy.com
  2. Direct Traffic 4,008 - direct link to your shop or item
  3. rebelmouse.com 457 - linked from Rebelmouse which runs off of TWITTER
  4. google.com 240 - google searches that link to your shop
  5. longurl.org 125 TWITTER - shorten url from RT's or tweets set up on generator
  6. t.co 102  TWITTER - shorten url from RT's or tweets set up on generator
  7. stumbleupon.com 56 - people who STUMBLE onto your items
  8. wanelo.com 45 - people who actually click your item in WANELO
  9. Google Product Listing Ads 44 - Ads paid for by Etsy that bring people to your shop
  10. yandex.ru 43 - search engine from Greece
  11. pinterest.com 39 - People who actually clicked your Pin to view your item
  12. thefind.com 39 - a shopping website (i never signed up?)
  13. mail.yahoo.com 18 - if you are in a yahoogroup this will show up when you share a link
  14. bing.com 12 - searches from Bing.com
  15. facebook.com 8 - links from your facebook page or any shares (not very popular ;-( )
  16. google.co.uk 8 - UK version of google search
  17. twikle.com 8 - a Beta program like Rebelmouse
  18. google.co.in 7 - Google india
  19. twitter.com 7 - This is clicks from your TWEETS not from the generators or RT's
  20. Etsy Mini 6 - If you have set up an Etsy Mini on your blog or website this will show up

So some pointers, first of all stats change weekly this is just a month overview so check your stats daily, weekly and monthly to see where your focus needs to be.  Secondly, always be open to new social networks and allow them 60-90 days before you judge them based on stats.

When you combine the Twitter sites you can truly see the importance of being ReTweeted. Had I not been ReTweeted I only would have had 7 views from Twitter. (i had 679 views thanks to RTs)

Google only works if you are following Etsy Guidlines to make sure you show up in searches. The more you follow the higher this number will grow!

Numbers like stumble with 56 and pinterest with 39 may seem like small numbers at first, but you need to realize that had you not gotten these visitors they would have never known about your store and you may have had less sales. Think in terms of a Brick and Mortar shop. They pay thousands of dollars to increase customer flow. The price they pay can be anywhere from $2-20 per new customer who walks in their doors. You are paying $0 to get these new customers that can turn into your best clients!

If you ever get a unkown link in your stats, just copy and paste it into your browser, you might a new place and be able to use it to your advantage. I am going to research thefind.com and this article since I never signed up for it maybe I can start getting more people to visit me from it! Happy Sales!

January Birthstones Garnet

Happy Birthday, January children!

The January Birthstone is garnet. The word "garnet" comes from the Latin word "granatus," meaning "grain" or "seed." This name was given to the garnet because of its close resemblance to the succulent pomegranate seed. It is also the stone for the Zodiac sign Aquarius. Garnet may traditionally be given as a gift on the second or sixth wedding anniversary.

There are many myths and legends about the garnet. One Biblical legend is that Noah hung this gem on the ark to light his way through the dark and stormy nights of God's wrath. A Greek myth linked to the garnet is the story of the young goddess of sunshine, Persephone, who was abducted by Hades, god of the underworld. Hades eventually released Persephone, but not before he offered her some pomegranate seeds, which guaranteed her return to him.

First mined in Sri Lanka over 2,500 years ago, the garnet is also found in Africa, Australia, India, Russia, Brazil, and in the United States, in Arizona and Idaho.

Although most commonly known as a red gemstone, the garnet comes in a variety of other hues, including muted yellows, vibrant oranges, rosy pinks, lime greens, and violets—a virtual bouquet of colors.  This diversity is due to unique combinations of elements within each particular gem, such as iron, calcium, and manganese.

Garnets are a related group of minerals. Members of this group include: almandine (red to violet red); spessartite (yellow, rose, or orange to reddish-brown); pyrope (deep red); grossular (white, yellow, yellow-green, brownish-red, orange or black); andradite (colorless, yellow-green, or brown to black). The most prized garnet is an emerald green variety called demantoid and is a member of the adradite group.

The garnet is a protective gem for travelers. A gift of garnet is symbolic of love and the desire for a loved one's safe travel and speedy homecoming.  It is January's birthstone, but far from being only a winter gem, the garnet, with its brilliance and multitude of colors, is truly one for any season.

Spiritual Gemstone meaning of Garnet:
The Garnet is known as the stone for a successful business. If your business is not as good as it should be, just put 3 or more garnets on your desk. It is believed that if a garnet is put under pillow it will cure depression. Garnets can be used to make a person popular and have self-esteem when worn as jewelry. It helps protect one on trips. Garnets bring constancy to friendships. Garnets are also known for stimulating success in business.

Healing properties of Garnet:
Garnet comes in many colors, this refers only to red Garnet. The Garnet is associated with the thyroid and spleen. It helps cleanse and purify both when held over the area. The Garnet is usually held in the hand or placed on top of the head when searching or meditating on past lives. Information that is beneficial and helpful will usually be released for the searcher.

The Garnet is a stone of purity and truth as well as a symbol of love and compassion. The information released in a search may be painful, but it will always be what the searcher needs. The Garnet will help everyone's security level and spiritual awareness. It can help increase the sex drive.
